Rotterdam is a young and dynamic city with a world-class port. Home to over 600,000 residents of over 170 different nationalities. The city is known internationally for its modern architecture, design and creativity, numerous festivals and events and vibrant clubbing culture. Rotterdam, the ‘Gateway to Europe’, has the largest seaport in Europe and is centrally located at the crossroads of major road, rail and water links. Downtown Rotterdam is only 15 minutes from Rotterdam The Hague Airport.en.rotterdam.info
During the Second World War, on 14 May 1940, fate struck the flourishing city. A German bombardment destroyed almost the entire city centre of Rotterdam. Just four days after the bombs fell, work began on reconstruction plans. The city had the courage to radically break with the past and made a daring choice for spacious town planning and modern architecture. The keynote was light, air and space.
Rotterdam has remained a trendsetter to this day, ensuring that the city keeps its ultra-modern feel. The city’s skyline is praised throughout the world as a paean to modern architecture. In Rotterdam, you can see buildings designed by internationally renowned architects such as Norman Foster and Renzo Piano, but famous Rotterdam practices including OMA and MVRDV have also left their mark on the city’s architecture. Many major construction projects have been completed the past year: Central Station, De Rotterdam building and the Markthal.
There is also architecture from the Nieuwe Bouwen (Modernism) period in Rotterdam. Beautiful examples include the Chabot Museum, Huis Sonneveld as well as the former tea, coffee and tobacco factory, the Van Nellefabriek (1925 – 1931). The last building was awarded a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. The Witte Huis (1897 – 1898) is an earlier architectural icon. Its eleven storeys made this 45-metre-high office building Europe’s tallest for many years.
The area round Museum Park in the heart of the city has a huge range of museums. Here you can find the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, the Kunsthal, the Nieuwe Instituut, Huis Sonneveld and the Natural History Museum. From Museum Park, you can take the buzzy Witte de Withstraat road, with its galleries, to the Maritime Museum. As a plus, the city’s open spaces are home to lots of sculptures by artists including Picasso, Rodin and Paul McCarthy. You will also come across lots of graffiti, lighting art and murals throughout your walk.
